Population Problem of Bangladesh

Introduction: Bangladesh is a small country with a very large population. Its area is only about 1,47,570 square kilometres, but more than 16 crore people live here. As a result, the country is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The rapid growth of population has become the root of many of our problems.

Causes of the problem: There are several causes behind the population problem. Illiteracy and lack of awareness are the main causes, because uneducated people do not understand the value of a small family. Early marriage, poverty and the desire for a male child make families larger. Many people think that more children will bring more income. Besides, due to better medical care, the death rate has fallen, but the birth rate has not fallen at the same pace.

Effects: Overpopulation affects every sphere of our life. There is a shortage of food, clothing, housing, education and medical care. It creates unemployment, and the number of jobless people is increasing day by day. Pressure on land creates problems for agriculture, and forests are cut down to make room for houses. The cities are overcrowded, and the slums are growing. Pollution, crime and traffic jams increase as well.

Remedies: To solve the problem, we have to take some effective steps. First, we should create mass awareness about family planning through TV, radio and newspapers. Second, we must spread education, especially among girls, and stop early marriage. Third, the government should provide family planning materials and services to every door at a low cost. Fourth, we should create employment so that the people can turn into human resources. Religious leaders and social workers can also play an important role.

Conclusion: Population is a blessing if it is educated and skilled, but it is a curse if it is uncontrolled and untrained. So, we should control the growth of population and develop our people as a skilled workforce. If the whole nation works together, we can overcome this problem.
