Our National Flag

The national flag is the symbol of the independence and pride of a nation. Our national flag is the proud symbol of our freedom, which we achieved at the cost of much blood in the Liberation War of 1971.

Our national flag has a deep green rectangular field with a red circle in the middle. The ratio of its length to its width is 10:6. The red circle is slightly nearer to the hoist side, so that it looks at the centre when the flag flies. The radius of the circle is one-fifth of the length of the flag. The green colour stands for the greenery of our land and the youth of our people. The red circle represents the rising sun and the blood of the martyrs who gave their lives for our freedom.

The flag was first hoisted on 2 March 1971 at Dhaka University. The present form of the flag was officially adopted after independence, with the red circle without the map of Bangladesh that was in the earlier design. It is hoisted on national days, such as Independence Day, Victory Day and International Mother Language Day, on government and private buildings, in schools and at international meetings. It is flown at half mast on days of national mourning.

We should respect our national flag and never allow it to be insulted. It reminds us of the sacrifice of the martyrs, and we should be ready to protect the honour of our country and flag with our lives.
