People Living Below the Poverty Line (1995–2010)

The bar graph shows the percentage of people living below the poverty line over a period of fifteen years, from 1995 to 2010. It gives data for four years: 1995, 2004, 2008 and 2010.

In 1995, 42.6 per cent of the people lived below the poverty line. This figure rose slightly to 45 per cent in 2004, which was the highest rate in the whole period. After that, the situation began to improve. In 2008, the poverty rate fell sharply to 36.3 per cent, a decrease of 8.7 percentage points compared with 2004. The downward trend continued, and by 2010 only 31.5 per cent of the people were living below the poverty line, which was the lowest figure shown in the graph.

Overall, the graph shows that poverty increased a little between 1995 and 2004 but then declined steadily. Between 2004 and 2010, the poverty rate dropped by 13.5 percentage points. This indicates that the economic condition of the people improved in the later years.
