A Village Fair You Visited

A village fair is a happy gathering of people from different villages at a fixed place and time. It is a great source of joy and entertainment for the villagers. Last winter I visited the Boishakhi fair of our village with my friends and cousins.

The fair was held in a large open field beside the river. When we reached there in the afternoon, the field was crowded with men, women and children in colourful dresses. There were hundreds of small shops selling earthen pots, toys, bamboo and cane goods, sweets, fruits and bangles. We bought some clay toys and ate sweets such as jilapi and batasha, which tasted wonderful.

There were many kinds of entertainment too. A merry-go-round and a giant wheel were running, and children were shouting with joy while riding them. In one corner, a group of folk singers were singing baul songs, and in another a puppet show and a magic show attracted large crowds. We also watched a jatra performance in the evening.

The fair was an important social occasion. People of different classes and professions met each other and exchanged greetings. Shopkeepers made good sales, and local artisans earned money by selling their products. We returned home late in the evening, tired but extremely happy. The memory of the fair will remain fresh in my mind for a long time. Such fairs preserve our rural culture and bring people closer to one another.
