Our National Flag

The national flag is the most important symbol of a nation. It represents the independence, pride and dignity of a country. The national flag of Bangladesh has a dark green rectangular field with a red circle in the middle. The green colour stands for the greenery of our land and the youth and vitality of our people. The red circle symbolizes the rising sun and the blood of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our independence. The flag was first hoisted on 2 March 1971 at Dhaka University during the War of Liberation. We hoist it on national days such as Independence Day and Victory Day, and it flies over government offices, educational institutions and embassies. It is flown at half-mast on days of national mourning. We should show due respect to our national flag and never let it touch the ground or be insulted in any way. It inspires us to love our motherland and to work for its progress.
