Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic speech of 7th March 1971, delivered at the Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka, is one of the most significant speeches in the history of Bangladesh. It was given at a time of acute political crisis, when the Pakistani rulers had postponed the National Assembly session despite the overwhelming victory of the Awami League in the 1970 election. In about eighteen minutes Bangabandhu rejected the military rulers' manipulation and set out four conditions for attending the assembly: withdrawal of martial law, return of the army to barracks, an inquiry into the killings, and transfer of power to the elected representatives. He also called for a non-cooperation movement and urged people to be ready for any ultimate struggle with whatever they had, ending with the memorable words, 'The struggle this time is the struggle for our emancipation; the struggle this time is the struggle for independence.' Although he did not make a formal declaration of independence, the speech virtually declared it and gave the Bengali nation clear direction, courage and unity. It inspired people from all walks of life to join the Liberation War a few weeks later. Its power and literary quality have been recognised internationally, and in 2017 UNESCO included it in the Memory of the World Register. Thus the speech remains a timeless source of inspiration for the nation.
