(2) The proverb 'Don't judge a book by its cover' means that we should not form an opinion about a person or thing merely from outward appearance. A plain-looking book may contain a brilliant story, and a beautifully bound one may be dull inside. In the same way, a person who dresses simply or speaks softly may be wise, honest and talented, while someone who looks smart and confident may lack real character. Appearance is often misleading because true worth lies in qualities such as knowledge, honesty and kindness, which are revealed only through close acquaintance. So, before we praise or condemn anyone, we should look beyond the surface and consider their deeds and character. The proverb teaches us to be patient, open-minded and fair in our judgement.
