(1) The Buriganga, once the lifeline of Dhaka, is now one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Its water has turned black and gives off a foul smell, especially in the dry season. Tanneries, textile mills and dyeing factories discharge toxic chemicals directly into the river. Households and hospitals add untreated sewage and solid waste every day. Illegal grabbers fill up its banks and reduce its width year after year. As a result, fish and other aquatic life have almost disappeared from the river. People living along its banks suffer from skin diseases, diarrhoea and breathing problems. The government has tried to shift tanneries and evict encroachers, but weak enforcement has limited the results. Dredging, sewage treatment plants and strict action against polluters are urgently needed. Unless we act together now, the Buriganga will die, and Dhaka will lose a vital source of life and a part of its heritage.
