A Tea Stall

A tea stall is a small roadside shop where tea and light snacks are sold. There is one such stall near my house, and last Friday I spent about an hour there. It was a small tin-roofed shop with a few wooden benches and a long table. The owner, an old man named Rahim Chacha, was busy boiling tea in a big kettle over a clay oven. Customers of all ages kept coming in. Some were rickshaw-pullers who needed a short rest, and some were office-goers who dropped in for a quick cup before work. Others were young men who sat for long and discussed politics, cricket and the price of daily goods. A radio played old songs in the background. Along with tea, the stall sold biscuits, bread, banana and cigarettes. A cup of tea cost only ten taka, so even poor people could afford it. The place was noisy but friendly, and strangers often became friends over a cup of tea. I noticed that the cups were not washed properly, which could spread diseases. Still, the stall is a lively meeting place of the neighbourhood. It also supports the owner's family. The hour I spent there gave me a real picture of ordinary people's life.
