A Winter Morning

A winter morning in Bangladesh is a quiet and beautiful time of the year. It comes with a thick blanket of fog, a chilly breeze and the sweet smell of dew-wet grass.

When we wake up on a winter morning, we feel reluctant to leave our warm beds. The sky is covered with mist, and the sun rises late behind the trees. Drops of dew shine like pearls on the grass and the leaves. Birds sing sweetly, and the whole village slowly comes to life.

People wear warm clothes such as sweaters, shawls and caps. Poor people, who do not have enough warm clothes, sit around a fire made of straw and dry leaves to keep themselves warm. Farmers go to the fields to collect date juice from the trees. In many houses women prepare delicious pitha, such as bhapa pitha and patishapta. The smell of date-juice molasses and pitha fills the air.

As the sun climbs higher, the fog disappears and a soft, golden light falls on the fields of mustard flowers and vegetables. Children play and the market becomes busy. A winter morning is enjoyable for the rich, but it is full of suffering for the poor. We should help them with warm clothes and blankets.
