Importance of Trees in Our Life

Introduction
Trees are the greatest gift of nature to human beings. We cannot imagine our life without them. They provide us with food, shelter, medicine and many other things that we need every day.

Trees give us oxygen
Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which we need for breathing. In this way, they keep the air clean and healthy.

Economic importance
Trees give us fruits, vegetables, timber, firewood and raw materials for paper and furniture. Many people earn their living from forests and orchards. Medicinal plants such as neem and tulsi help us to cure diseases.

Protection of the environment
Trees keep the temperature moderate, attract rainfall and prevent floods and soil erosion. Their roots hold the soil firmly. In coastal areas, the mangrove forests protect people from cyclones and tidal surges. Trees also give shade and shelter to birds and animals.

What we should do
Unfortunately, trees are being cut down thoughtlessly for houses, roads and industries. This damages the environment and increases global warming. We should plant at least one tree every year, protect existing trees and take part in tree plantation programmes.
