Causes of Road Accidents in Bangladesh

Road accidents have become a common and alarming problem in Bangladesh. Every day many people are killed or injured on our roads. Last vacation, the bus I was travelling in to Rajshahi met with an accident, but luckily nobody was killed. There are several causes behind such accidents. Firstly, reckless and over-speeding driving is the main cause. Many drivers try to overtake other vehicles in a hurry and lose control. Secondly, a large number of drivers do not have valid driving licences or proper training. Thirdly, many vehicles are old and unfit, and their brakes or tyres often fail suddenly. Moreover, the roads are narrow, broken and poorly maintained, and there are not enough signs and signals. Besides, pedestrians and passengers often cross the road carelessly and ignore traffic rules. Lastly, corruption and weak enforcement of the law allow unfit vehicles and unskilled drivers to remain on the road. To reduce accidents, the government should enforce traffic laws strictly, repair the roads and create public awareness. If everybody obeys the rules, our roads will become safe.
