Rules: (a) is a third conditional (If + past perfect, would have + past participle). (b) "as if" for an unreal comparison takes the past form (were). (c) "Scarcely had ... when" is the correlative pair. (d) "where" introduces an adverbial clause of place. (e) "when" introduces an adverbial clause of time.
