Water Pollution

Water is called life because every living being needs it to survive. Without water, there can be no life on the earth. But this precious thing is being polluted day by day in many ways, and it has become a serious problem of the modern world, especially in Bangladesh.

There are many causes of water pollution. Firstly, the wastes of mills and factories, such as chemicals, dyes and oil, are thrown directly into rivers and canals without treatment. The tanneries of Hazaribagh polluted the river Buriganga in this way. Secondly, people throw household garbage, plastic, polythene and even dead animals into water bodies. Thirdly, farmers use chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the fields, and rain washes them into ponds and rivers. Besides, oil spilled from launches, ships and boats also pollutes the water, and the sewage of cities flows into rivers.

Water pollution has dangerous effects. Polluted water causes diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid and jaundice. Fish and other aquatic animals die, and the balance of nature is disturbed. Pure drinking water becomes scarce, and the cost of treatment rises.

To prevent water pollution, industries must set up effluent treatment plants, and the government must enforce the laws strictly. We should not throw wastes into water and should use fertilizers and pesticides carefully. Above all, mass awareness is necessary. If we all take steps together, we can save our water and ourselves.
