The Bad Impacts of Deforestation
Trees are the most precious gift of nature, but we are cutting them down at an alarming rate. Deforestation means the clearing of forests and cutting of trees without planting new ones. It has many bad impacts on our environment and our life.
First, trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. When trees are cut down, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air rises, which increases global warming. As a result, the temperature of the earth is going up, the polar ice is melting and the sea level is rising. Second, trees hold the soil with their roots. Without trees, the soil is washed away by rain, which causes soil erosion and floods. Third, rainfall decreases because trees help to bring rain. Over time, the land turns into a desert and crops fail, so there is drought and food shortage.
Moreover, forests are the home of birds, animals and insects. When forests are destroyed, many of them lose their shelter and some species become extinct. The balance of nature is disturbed. Deforestation also deprives us of fruits, timber, fuel and medicines, and increases air pollution.
Bangladesh is a densely populated country and needs more forest area, yet our forest land is shrinking day by day because of cutting trees for houses, roads and industries. We must stop cutting trees and plant more trees to save ourselves and the coming generations. Only then can we keep our environment safe and healthy.
