(2) Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, was the greatest political leader in the history of Bangladesh. He started his political career as a student leader and soon became the trusted voice of the Bengali people. In 1966 he placed the historic Six-Point Demand, which became the charter of the Bengalis' right to self-rule. For his stand he was jailed several times, but he never gave up his principles. The Agartala Conspiracy Case against him only increased his popularity, and the mass uprising of 1969 forced the government to release him. The people then gave him the title of "Bangabandhu". His party, the Awami League, won a landslide victory in the general election of 1970. When power was denied to the elected leader, he delivered the historic speech of 7 March 1971 and called on the people to prepare for freedom. In the early hours of 26 March 1971 he declared independence, and the nation fought a nine-month liberation war under his inspiration. After returning from captivity in January 1972, he led the war-torn country towards rebuilding, and his leadership remains a source of inspiration for all Bengalis.
