Tertiary Level Education in Bangladesh

Tertiary level education in Bangladesh begins after the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination and includes university and college education. It is offered by public universities, private universities, national university affiliated colleges, and specialised institutions such as engineering, medical and agricultural universities. Admission to public universities is highly competitive because the number of seats is limited compared with the number of applicants. Over the last two decades, private universities have expanded access for many students, although the cost is often high. The University Grants Commission supervises higher education and works to maintain quality. However, the sector still faces problems such as session jams, shortage of qualified teachers, lack of research funding and a gap between graduate skills and job market demands. If curricula are updated, research is encouraged and technology is used properly, tertiary education can produce skilled citizens who contribute to the nation's development.
