Traffic Jam

A traffic jam is a situation in which vehicles move very slowly or stop completely on a road. It is a daily problem in big cities like Dhaka. Recently I was stuck in a long jam on my way to the examination hall. I had left home early, but a long queue of buses, cars, rickshaws and CNG-run auto-rickshaws filled the road, and nothing moved for nearly forty minutes. I was extremely anxious about being late for the exam. Many other passengers were also restless, and the sound of horns made the situation worse. In the end I got down and ran the last distance, and I reached the hall just in time.

There are many reasons for traffic jams. The number of vehicles is increasing day by day, but the roads are not widened accordingly. Drivers often do not follow traffic rules, and they park their vehicles in the wrong places. Hawkers and illegal shops occupy the footpaths, so pedestrians walk on the road. The signals sometimes do not work properly, and construction work on the roads adds to the trouble.

Traffic jams waste our valuable time and fuel and cause pollution and mental stress. Students, patients and office-goers suffer most. To solve the problem, we should build more roads and flyovers, improve public transport and ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws. Citizens should also obey the rules. Only then can we get relief from this daily suffering.
