A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is described directly as another thing to show a likeness between them, without using 'like' or 'as'. Unlike a simile, it does not use a word of comparison.

Example: Life is a journey. / He is a lion in battle. Here life is directly identified as a journey, and the man is identified with a lion to express his courage.
