(2.1) Hazards of Attending Admission Tests at Different Universities

Admission tests are the gateway to higher education in Bangladesh, but attending them at different universities is a painful experience for students and their guardians.

The first hazard is travel. Many universities are in different cities, and test dates are often close together. Students have to travel long distances by bus or train, often overnight, over crowded and risky roads. Secondly, accommodation is a problem. Since students arrive a day early, they must stay in cheap hotels, mess houses or even on the floor of a relative's home. Thirdly, the cost is heavy. Application fees, travel, food and lodging together put a big burden on poor families. Fourthly, the physical and mental strain is serious. Lack of sleep, unhealthy food and tension before the test often lower a student's performance. Sometimes two tests fall on the same day, so a student has to give up one of them. Finally, the crowd at the test centres, long queues and poor facilities add to the suffering. Girls also face extra safety concerns when they travel alone.

The authorities can reduce these hazards by arranging a common admission test, as in the cluster system, and by providing basic facilities near the centres. Such steps would save time, money and energy and make admission a fairer process for all students.
