Answers:
a) 21 February is a memorable day in our national history because on this day in 1952 students of Dhaka University brought out a procession to establish Bangla as a state language. The police opened fire and Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, Safiur and Jabbar were killed. We observe it every year as Shaheed Dibosh and International Mother Language Day.
b) The declaration of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Dhaka on 21 March 1948 that Urdu would be the only state language of Pakistan raised a storm of protest all over the country. The people of the country, especially the students, were responsible for it. They protested in meetings, rallies and processions, and the protest continued non-stop, gathering momentum day by day.
c) The Pakistani government tried to prevent the protest by outlawing all sorts of public meetings and rallies.
d) The students of Dhaka University defied the law. On 21 February 1952 they brought out a peaceful protest procession against the declaration.
e) The Language Movement kindled the sparks of the independence movement of Bangladesh. After the killings of 1952 there were mass protests all over the country and the government had to declare Bangla a state language. The spirit of the movement taught Bangalis to fight for their rights, and it eventually led them to independence.
