(2) Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease. If someone is infected, the following measures should be taken:

1. Consult a doctor at once. Anyone with high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, or joint and muscle pain should see a physician and have a blood test (NS1 antigen or platelet count) done.
2. Take complete rest. The patient should stay in bed and avoid physical strain.
3. Drink plenty of fluids. Water, oral saline, fruit juice, rice water and coconut water prevent dehydration.
4. Use only paracetamol for fever. Aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided because they can increase the risk of bleeding.
5. Use a mosquito net. The patient should sleep under a net during the day too, so that mosquitoes cannot bite and spread the virus to others.
6. Watch for warning signs. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, black stool, or extreme weakness requires immediate hospitalisation.
7. Eliminate mosquito breeding places. Clear stagnant water around the house, such as in flower pots, tyres and buckets, to stop the Aedes mosquito from breeding.

With early diagnosis, proper rest and fluids, most patients recover fully.
