The Influence of Culture on Adolescents

Culture plays a powerful role in shaping the thoughts, values and behaviour of adolescents. Teenagers learn language, manners, beliefs and traditions from their families and community, and these form the base of their identity. Today, social media, films and music from other cultures also influence the way they dress, speak and think. A healthy cultural environment teaches them respect, discipline and responsibility, and helps them grow into good citizens. However, uncritical imitation of foreign culture may weaken their bond with their own traditions and create identity confusion. Therefore, parents and teachers should guide adolescents to preserve their own culture while accepting what is good from others.
