(2.1) Identify and explain any one literary device used in the above extract.

(2.2) Compare and contrast nature and mankind as presented in the given extract.

উত্তর ও ব্যাখ্যা

(2.1) Personification. In the extract the winter wind is addressed as a person: it is called 'unkind', it has a 'tooth' that bites, and its 'breath' is 'rude'. Giving the wind human qualities and body parts makes the cold seem like a living, hostile being and helps the reader feel its harshness. (The direct address 'Blow, blow, thou winter wind' is also an example of apostrophe.)

(2.2) Similarity: Both nature and mankind can cause pain; the winter wind bites and has a 'rude' breath, just as people can hurt others.

Contrast: The poet argues that the wind is less cruel than human beings. The wind's tooth 'is not so keen' as man's ingratitude. Nature's harshness is impersonal, unintentional and temporary, and its attack is only physical, so it is easier to bear. Man's ingratitude is deliberate and comes from those we have helped, so it wounds the heart and lasts much longer. Thus, nature is shown as honest and less unkind, while mankind is shown as ungrateful and more cruel.
