On 10 January 1972, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to independent Bangladesh after nine months of imprisonment in Pakistan. He travelled via London and Delhi and reached Dhaka, where millions of people welcomed him. The same afternoon he addressed a vast gathering at the Race Course Ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan).
In the speech he expressed his deep gratitude to the people for the sacrifices of the Liberation War and remembered the martyrs. He thanked the countries and leaders that had stood by Bangladesh in its struggle, especially India, and expressed his gratitude to the Soviet Union and other friendly countries. He said that the people of Bangladesh were free and that the country would be built on the principles of democracy, secularism, socialism and nationalism. He also called for the rebuilding of the war-torn nation and urged everyone to work together for it.
The speech is historically important because it marked the beginning of the nation-building process of the newly independent country and reflected Bangabandhu's vision of a prosperous, non-communal and democratic Bangladesh.
