Deforestation refers to the indiscriminate cutting down of trees and clearing of forest areas on a massive scale without replanting them. It has emerged as one of the most alarming global environmental concerns today. Rapid population growth is the primary driver of deforestation, as more land is required for human settlement, agriculture, industrialization, and infrastructure development. Additionally, trees are felled extensively to obtain timber, firewood, and raw materials for paper and furniture industries. Although deforestation serves short-term human needs, its long-term consequences are disastrous for the planet. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, maintaining atmospheric balance. The destruction of forests accelerates global warming and induces severe climate change, leading to erratic weather patterns, frequent droughts, floods, and cyclones. It also leads to severe soil erosion and the extinction of numerous wildlife species through habitat loss. In Bangladesh, deforestation is exacerbating ecological fragility, particularly in coastal and hilly belts. To prevent this looming catastrophe, effective measures must be implemented immediately. Tree plantation campaigns like social forestry should be expanded, alternative sources of energy must be adopted, and strict environmental laws should be enforced against illegal logging. Protecting our forests is indispensable for the survival of mankind and the ecosystem.
