রাকিব ও তুহিন একই গ্রামের দুইজন কৃষক। রাকিবের ছোট আয়তনের জমিতে যে ফসল উৎপাদন হয় তা দ্বারা তার পরিবার কোনোরকমে জীবিকানির্বাহ করতে পারে। অন্যদিকে তুহিন তার বৃহৎ আয়তনের জমিতে চাষাবাদের আধুনিক পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে অধিক ফসল উৎপাদনের মাধ্যমে অধিক মুনাফা অর্জন করে।

একটি দেশ তার জরুরি প্রয়োজনে, অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে খাদ্য, ওষুধ, প্রকল্প, দান, অনুদান, ঋণ, আর্থিক ও কারিগরি যেকোনো ধরনের সাহায্য গ্রহণ করতে পারে। যাকে বৈদেশিক সাহায্য বলে। তবে এ ধরনের সাহায্য কঠিন শর্তযুক্ত হয়। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে সুদের হার উচ্চ হয়, যাকে প্রত্যক্ষ ও পরোক্ষভাবে দাতার স্বার্থ সংরক্ষণে। ব্যবহার হয় এবং গ্রহীতা দেশকে পরনির্ভরশীল করে রাখে। অন্যদিকে বৈদেশিক বাণিজ্যের মাধ্যমে অভ্যন্তরীণ সম্পদের কাম্য ব্যবহার নিশ্চিত করা যায়, স্বাধীনভাবে উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ করা যায় এবং বৈদেশিক নির্ভরশীলতা হ্রাসের মাধ্যমে একটি আত্মনির্ভরশীল জাতি হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা লাভ করা যায়।
