স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের পর 'ক' দেশে অনেক দ্রব্যসামগ্রীর প্রাপ্তি মূলত আমদানির ওপর নির্ভরশীল ছিল। এ কারণে জনগণকে অনেক উচ্চমূল্য দিতে হতো। তবে দেশীয় উদ্যোক্তাদের বিনিয়োগের ফলে দেশে এসব পণ্যের শিল্পায়ন হয়েছে। বর্তমানে দেশটির চাহিদার প্রায় ৮০% দ্রব্যসামগ্রী দেশে উৎপাদিত হয়। এর মধ্যে কোনো কোনো দ্রব্য বিদেশেও রপ্তানি হচ্ছে।

১৯৮০'র দশকে বাংলাদেশে একটি শ্রমনিবিড় শিল্প গড়ে ওঠে। এর ফলে নারীদের ব্যাপক কর্মসংস্থানের সুযোগ সৃষ্টি হয়। বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশে এটি বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনের সর্ববৃহৎ উৎস। দক্ষ শ্রমিকের যোগান এবং বৈচিত্র্যময় আইটেম তৈরি করতে পারলে এই শিল্পের এখনো ব্যাপক সম্ভাবনা বিদ্যমান।
